Survey reveals most popular emerging market expat destinations

BRIC Nations

New research has examined which emerging markets are the most popular destinations for expats, as more and more expats are travelling are being placed in a variety of global locations.

Relocation specialists Cartus conducted a survey of more than 100 global corporations, with questions regarding where their employees were being sent on international assignments.

The BRIC nations were typically popular, China and India being the number one and two top locations respectively, with 53 percent of the companies surveyed claiming that China was the destination they would be sending the most workers.

Interestingly, a number of other emerging markets were also highlighted as big receivers of expat workers. One of the big surprises was the charting of Vietnam in 11th place. Middle East destinations also received numerous mentions.

Cartus Vice President Matt Spinolo said: “Our 2011 emerging markets survey pointed to a broad range of locations into which companies expect to have relocation volume over the next two years. Of particular interest is the fact that respondents identified more countries in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) than in any other region. Of these, the greatest proportion is represented by countries in Africa. While we are already seeing these appear more frequently in our own client patterns, many of them have not been among the more familiar destinations for assignments in the past”.
